Udawalawe National Park - Best Place to Elephants Watching
If you need to go close to herds of wild elephants, udawalawa national park is the right place. It's one of the best tourist destination in Sri Lanka.In fact, this park is well famous to wild elephants watching, in additional you can see water buffalo, wild-boar, spotted deer, sambur deer, wild cat, mongooses, foxes, macaque, crocodiles and many more varies of birds and reptiles.
It's located on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces, in Sri Lanka. The national park was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River, as well as to protect the catchment of the reservoir. The reserve covers 30,821 hectares (119.00 sq.m) of land area and was established on 30 June 1972.
The entrance to the park is 12km from the Ratnapura–Hambantota road turn off and 21km from Embilipitiya. Some people take a tour organised by their guesthouse or hotel, but you can arrange tour by well experienced tour operators from outside. Park open from 6.00am to 6.00pm.
